Its name is inspired by the ubiquitous royal palms of southeast Florida. The population of this prosperous community has almost doubled since 2000. From the beginning, Royal Palm Beach has been developed with an emphasis on diverse recreational opportunities.

History of Royal Palm Beach

In the 1950s, a Philadelphia family in the supermarket business purchased 65,000 acres of undeveloped land for $1.25 million. A huge drainage project ensued, and the state legislature granted permission for the development to proceed. Although Royal Palm Beach was incorporated in 1959, the population a year later stood at 11. It would be another two decades before real growth would commence. The 1980 population of 3,423 expanded to 21,523 by 1990.

Parks and Recreation

An ongoing mission of the village's leadership has been to protect and preserve green space. The Village provides 20 parks of diversified activities which enrich lifetime skills, physical development, and fulfillment of personal needs.

Commons Park offers an array of desirable amenities, including a 17,000 sq-ft Sporting Center with banquet room and patio; an interactive splash fountain; and a wedding pavilion. The Golf Training Center features a driving range, 18 hole tournament green, and three chipping greens. There's also a canoe/kayak launch and fishing docks on a 19-acre lake. Sand volleyball, disc golf and three miles of jogging trails add further to the recreational possibilities. With 20 picnic pavilions, this is the perfect park for a bit of everything.

The 70-acre Seminole Palms Park includes the facilities of the Calypso Bay Waterpark, lighted ball fields, playgrounds and picnic pavilions. The water park features two water slides, an interactive splash area, lap pool and river ride.

The 65-acre Preservation Park is also richly arrayed with desirable features, including a 33,000 sq-ft rec center with gym and weight room. There's also a skate arena, two roller hockey rinks, basketball courts and lighted soccer/football fields.

Veteran's Park boasts 6 acres including a large and small amphitheater, bocce court, walking path, interactive fountain, and 2 picnic pavilions.

Golf in Royal Palm Beach

Golf is a major attraction for many people that relocate or retire in southeast Florida. Royal Palm Bach residents can choose from the two courses that the Village contains.

The community is the home of the Village Golf Club, which offers 18 holes of championship golf in a beautiful park-like setting. From the back tees, the par-72 layout measures a healthy 6,860 yards long. The course carries a respectable 134 slope rating. Accurate shots are consistently rewarded, but the ample water hazards, numerous bunkers and groves of trees will often penalize the wayward shot.

There is also the Madison Green Golf course to choose from. Madison Green is one of South Florida's top rated courses. This top of the notch course offers 18 holes of championship golf in lush, natural setting; with something new and exciting at every turn. The par-72 layout measurement playing 7,106 yards, from the back tees.

Activities and Attractions

Lion Country Safari is a drive-thru safari park just west of Royal Palm Beach. When it opened in 1967, it became the first facility of its kind in the United States. The preserve consists of seven areas, with the Serengeti Plains, Gorongosa Reserve, Ruaha National Park and Las Pampas among them. See many of the 900 animals as you complete the four-mile drive through the preserve, including giraffes, zebras, hippos and many more. There's also the Animal Theater, petting zoo, waterpark and spray-ground.

Annual Events

The Star Spangled Spectacular is a Fourth-of-July celebration at Commons Park. The cornhole tournament, bass fishing tournament, volleyball tournament and the Firecracker Golf Tournament are just some of the activities that precede the fireworks display.

Recent growth in Royal Palm Beach means that many newer homes with the latest amenities are on the market. Select from three and four-bedroom designs gracefully framed by swaying palms, conveniently located condominiums or larger estate-style residences.
